새벽이생추어리는
새벽이생추어리(Dawn Sanctuary)는 2020년 4월에 설립된 국내 1호 생추어리입니다. 국내 최초로 축산업의 돼지농장에서 공개구조(Open Rescue)된 ‘새벽’이라는 돼지가 삶을 되찾고 자신의 존재답게 살아가길 바라는 시민들이 연대하여 조성한 공간이자, 동물과 함께 정의로운 사회를 지향하는 동물권 단체입니다.
생추어리(sanctuary)*란 ‘보호구역’, ‘피난처’, ‘안식처’라는 뜻입니다. 공장식 축산∙동물 실험 등의 산업에서 삶을 착취 당한 동물들이 억압과 폭력에서 벗어나 평생을 살아갈 수 있도록 돌보고 지원하는 동물권 운동입니다.
지난 2020년, 돼지농가에서 공개구조된 ‘새벽’이라는 돼지가 살아갈 터전을 만들기 위한 생추어리 프로젝트가 시작되었습니다. 한 달여 만에 모인 약 1천 만원의 후원금과 일일 자원 활동가들의 일손이 모여 생추어리를 일궈냈습니다. 어떠한 재정적, 경험적 기반도 없는 상황에서 국내 1호 생추어리가 시작될 수 있었던 바탕에는 공장식 축산업에서 살아남은 돼지가 죽임 당하지 않고, 자신답게 살아가기를 바라는 마음을 가진 시민들의 물적∙신체적∙정신적 연대 덕분이었습니다.
첫 번째 입주동물인 새벽에 이어, 2021에는 실험동물로 태어나 안락사 위기에서 구조된 돼지 잔디가 두 번째로 입주하여 살고 있습니다. 그리고 5년이라는 시간이 흘러 2025년 6월과 7월, 도로 위에서 각자 구조된 오리 '더덕'과 닭 '뿌리'가 새벽이생추어리의 세 번째, 네 번째 거주동물로 입주했습니다.

Dawn Sanctuary (새벽이생추어리) is Korea's first sanctuary, established in April 2020. It was created through the coming-together of people who wished for Dawn, the first pig to ever be open-rescued from a livestock pig farm in Korea, to reclaim his life and to flourish in it. It is also an animal-rights collective envisioning a just society alongside animals.
“Sanctuary” means a zone of protection, a refuge, a place of rest. It is an animal rights movement that cares for and supports animals who have had their lives exploited by factory farming, animal experimentation and other industries, to live out their natural lives free from oppression and violence.
In 2020, a sanctuary project was launched to create a new home for Dawn, a pig open-rescued from a pig farm. Within a month, about 10 million won in donations and the labor of day volunteers came together to build a sanctuary. Without any financial or experiential basis, the first-ever farm animal sanctuary in Korea was made possible by the material, physical and moral solidarity of people who shared the common vision for a pig who survived factory farming to keep living, and to keep living as himself.
Following the first resident Dawn, Jandi – a pig born in a testing lab and rescued from the brink of ‘euthanasia’ – became the second resident in 2021. And five years later, TheDuck, a duck who escaped from a truck, joined as the third resident in June 2025. A few months later, Ppuri, a rooster who also escaped from a truck, became the fourth and our newest resident.
