새벽이생추어리

2020년 2월에 태어난 잔디는 의약 회사로 추정되는 곳에서 실험 동물로 길러진 돼지입니다.

어렸을 때 실험실에서 탈출하려다 머리를 크게 다쳐 병원에서 치료를 받았어요. 회사 측에서는 수술 후 회복이 더딘 잔디의 안락사를 요구했지만, 새벽을 보호했던 활동가를 극적으로 만난 잔디는 안락사 위기에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다.

잔디의 정확한 출생일은 알 수 없었지만 2월 즈음 태어났다는 것을 알게 되어, 활동가들은 봄의 시작인 입춘을 잔디의 생일로 기념하기로 했습니다. '잔디'라는 이름에는 새벽이생추어리에 오기까지 힘든 여정을 지나 잔디처럼 생존력 강하게, 굳세게 살기를 바라는 마음이 담겼습니다. 가을과 겨울을 활동가의 집에서 생활하며 체력을 회복한 잔디는 2021년 2월, 새벽이생추어리에 입주하여 지금까지 지내오고 있습니다.

태어나서 줄곧 실내 생활만 했던 잔디는 생추어리에 입주하던 날 처음 흙을 밟았습니다. 코로 조심스럽게 흙냄새를 맡던 잔디는 점차 생추어리의 자연환경에 적응하여 이제 마음껏 코로 흙을 파고 진흙목욕도 즐깁니다. 열심히 흙을 파서 등 근육도 발달하고 도랑 위를 훌쩍 뛰어넘을 만큼 다리고 튼튼해졌습니다.

좋고 싫음이 분명한 잔디는 여러 가지 채소가 담긴 밥그릇에서 좋아하는 음식을 먼저 골라 먹고, 입맛에 맞지 않거나 싫증 난 채소는 아예 남기기도 합니다. 원하는 것이 있으면 코로 활동가들의 다리나 엉덩이를 강하게 밀어서 요구하고, 불편한 상황에 놓일 땐 큰 소리로 싫다는 의사를 분명하게 표현합니다. 특히 옆으로 누운 자세에서 배를 쓰다듬는 마사지를 받기를 좋아합니다.

잔디와 같이 실험 동물로 길러진 동물들은 인간과 유사하다는 이유로 각종 실험에 신체를 착취당하면서도, 인간이 아니기에 끝내 죽임당하는 종 차별주의의 피해자입니다. 강력한 삶의 의지로 다채로운 감정과 욕구를 표현하는 잔디의 모습은 인간과 비인간 동물이 다르다는 착각을 깨고, 비인간 동물을 취향과 고유한 성격이 있는 개별적인 존재로 인식하게 합니다.

Jandi, born in February 2020, was raised as a laboratory animal in a facility believed to be a pharmaceutical company.

When she was young, Jandi suffered a serious head injury while trying to escape the laboratory and received treatment at the hospital. As Jandi was slow to recover from the surgery, the pharmaceutical company requested that she be put to death. Fortunately, Jandi had a dramatic encounter with the activist who had previously protected Dawn, and narrowly escaped being put to death.

As activists came to learn that Jandi was born in or around February, they decided to celebrate her birthday on ‘Ipchun,’ the first day of spring. The name "Jandi" (meaning grass or meadow) reflects their hope that she will live strongly and resiliently like grass after the difficult journey to Dawn Sanctuary. After spending the autumn and winter recovering her strength at the activist’s home, Jandi moved in in February 2021 and has been a resident ever since.

After living only indoors since birth, Jandi stepped on earth for the first time on her first day at the sanctuary. At first, Jandi cautiously sniffed the smell of the earth with her nose, but gradually adapted to the natural environment of the sanctuary. She now digs around in the dirt and enjoys muddy baths to her heart's content. By digging vigorously, her back muscles have developed, and she has become strong enough to leap over ditches.

Jandi clearly expresses her likes and dislikes; she picks her favorite food first from a bowl containing various vegetables and often leaves behind those she doesn’t like or has had enough of. When she wants something, Jandi pushes her nose into the activists’ legs or backsides to demand it. She clearly expresses her dislike loudly when she finds herself in uncomfortable situations. She loves belly rubs while on her side.

Animals raised as laboratory subjects like Jandi are victims of speciesism, being exploited in myriad experiments due to their perceived similarities to humans, yet ultimately having their lives taken away because they are not human. Jandi’s display of diverse emotions and desires through her strong will to live breaks illusions that the non-human and the human are fundamentally different. She helps us recognize that non-human animals are individuals with their own unique preferences and personalities.
