새벽이생추어리

지난 25년 초여름, 매일의 돌봄을 위해 생추어리로 향하던 활동가가 도로 위에 덩그러니 앉아있던 오리를 발견했습니다. 집오리는 축산업에서 사용되는 가금류 품종이라는 점으로 비추어 보았을 때, 농장 혹은 도살장으로 이동하던 중 도로에 떨어졌을 것으로 추정됩니다.

도로에서 구조한 당시 오리는 날개와 등의 털이 없어서 붉은 빛의 속살이 드러나있었습니다. 또한 혼자 서서 몸을 지탱하지 못하며 걸을 때마다 넘어질 정도로 다리 상태가 좋지 않았습니다. 활동가들은 오리를 숙소에 데려와 임시보호를 시작했고, 25년 6월 7일에 새벽이생추어리에 세 번째 거주동물로 입주하게 됐습니다.

‘더덕’은 매생이(연대자)분들과 함께 지은 이름입니다. 더덕은 영어로 'The' duck. 수많은 오리 중 고유함을 지니고 있는 '그' 오리라는 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 또한 추운 겨울에도 자라나는 덩쿨 식물인 더덕처럼, 이 땅에 뿌리 내려 굳건히 살아가길 바라는 마음을 담은 이름입니다.

생추어리에 온 이후 더덕은 잔디의 마당과 안방을 오가며 지내고 있습니다. 잔디가 잠들면 옆에 붙어 있기도 하고, 잔디의 식사 시간에는 함께 먹으려 다가가기도 합니다. 때로는 경계하고, 때로는 의지하며 두 존재는 함께 살아가는 법을 배우는 중입니다.

활동가들은 걸음이 편치 않은 더덕을 위해 땅을 파서 작은 연못을 만들었습니다. 처음에는 낯선 환경에 놀라 뛰쳐나가기도 했지만, 지금은 유유히 물 위를 떠다니고 목욕을 즐길 만큼 익숙해졌습니다. 아마도 농장에서 태어나 수영을 배운 적이 없을 더덕에게는 낯선 연못에 적응할 시간이 필요했습니다. 이제 더덕은 천천히, 그리고 단단히 자신의 삶을 살아가고 있습니다. 더덕이 이 땅에서 더덕답게 살아가는 모습을 함께 지켜봐주세요!

In the early summer of 2025, an activist on her way to the sanctuary for her daily shift discovered a duck sitting motionless on the road. As 집오리 — the domestic duck — is a breed commonly used in the livestock industry, we believe she fell from a vehicle transporting her to a farm or a slaughterhouse.

When she was rescued from the road, the duck had no feathers on her wings or back, leaving her raw red flesh exposed. Her legs were also in poor condition — she was unable to support herself standing and would topple over with each step. Activists brought her to one of their homes, and began providing temporary care. On June 7, 2025, she became the third resident of Dawn Sanctuary.

Her name “TheDuck” (더덕) was created by our subscribers and supporters together. TheDuck is a climbing plant that thrives even through cold winters, and symbolizes our hope that she will put down her roots in this land and live on with resilience. At the same time, the word also sounds quite like the English “The Duck” – as in the one-and-only duck who is distinctly her own, a unique and individual duck. And we decide to celebrate her birthday each year at 'Ipha', the solar term that marks the beginning of summer.

Since arriving at the sanctuary, TheDuck has been spending her days moving freely between Jandi's yard and the indoor space. She can sometimes be found nestled close beside Jandi as she sleeps, and at mealtimes she wanders over to eat alongside her. Sometimes wary, sometimes leaning on each other — the two are in the midst of learning how to share a life together.

To help TheDuck, who was experiencing difficulty walking, the activists dug up the ground and made her a small pond. At first, she was startled by the unfamiliar environment and would leap away in fright, but she has since grown comfortable enough to glide freely across the water and enjoy a proper bath. Born on a farm with no chance to learn to swim, she just needed time to get used to this unfamiliar pond. She is now living her life slowly and steadily, on her own terms.
